Valborg under sail

About Valborg and the Tall Ships Races

s/v Valborg competed in the 2025 Tall Ships Races across the North Sea and the English Channel, calling at French ports for the first time in her history.

s/v Valborg was built in 1948 in Porvoo as a wooden cargo galeas. As commercial freight under sail gave way to modern transport, she was acquired by sea scouts in the late 1970s. Her cargo hold was converted into mess decks and berths for crew accommodation. Extensively refitted in the late 1990s for offshore voyaging, Valborg today serves as an active youth sail training vessel.

Why participate?

The Tall Ships Races 2025 gathered the international tall ship fleet in the North Sea. By race regulations, at least half of the trainee crew on each leg was aged 15 to 25. Trainees took part in all aspects of shipboard life, from standing watch to handling traditional gaff-rigged canvas, and met crews from across the world in host ports: Le Havre, Dunkirk, Aberdeen, Kristiansand, and Esbjerg.

Is previous experience required?

No prior sailing experience was required. All trainees were instructed onboard in watchkeeping, sail handling, and deck safety under experienced ship officers. A valid passport or national ID card was required, along with written parental consent for crew members under 18.
